One of the Seven Power Shifts I share with clients is Powerful Thoughts. This principle is a shift in thinking from a creature who is “acted upon” to a creator who “acts”. A wise spiritual leader pointed out that “in the grand division of all of God’s creations, there are things to act, and things to be acted upon.” (David A. Bednar).
Benjamin Disraeli said, “Man is not the creature of circumstances, circumstances are the creatures of men. We are free agents, and man is more powerful than matter.”
We have learned from repeated human experience that the quality and focus of our thoughts has a huge impact on the quality and destination of our results and circumstances. No, we cannot control every outward detail. For example, no matter how hard I think about it, I have zero effect on whether it rains, snows, or is sunny outside. But I have 100% control over how I choose to interpret the weather. Does it mean my day is bad if it rains? Nope. Do I need to change my plans for a picnic with my family? Maybe. We can choose to picnic and get wet and enjoy that. Or we can change our activity to one that involves being in swim suits. Or we can move the picnic inside. There are a myriad of ways WITHIN OUR CONTROL to respond to circumstances outside our control with grace, humor, dignity, joy, and health.
And while acceptance of things we can’t control is important, the other HUGE piece is focusing on the things we CAN control, and deliberately moving them toward our chosen destination. In June of 2018, I stopped seeing myself as a morbidly obese guy who could not lose weight. I began the work of seeing myself as a healthy man who had the power to make good choices each day — choices which compound over time to become healthy habits and healthy results. My change in beliefs and thoughts contributed to a change in IDENTITY, which makes change so much easier!
KEY: When we accept the idea that we have power over our circumstances, we begin the journey of taking positive control of the tools that will shape and mold those circumstances.
